JC's Road Trip - Cruising up to Doi Inthanon National Park, Thailand

  One of the most fun outdoor activities in northern Thailand is cruising around the country roads that wind through the hills around Chiang Mai. And people who like day trips from Chiang Mai will be pleased to know there is one cool option. Very cool. Actually cold! You can take your own bike or car and go to Doi Inthanon National Park.
Getting away from Chiang Mai's hectic, polluted and slightly dangerous driving conditions is great. The air clears as you get high into the mountainous North Country. This is a gorgeous journey, especially for motorcyclists. Follow along with me for the day and enjoy our journey!

One of my members wanted to have this place checked out. So here goes. Viangbua Mansion is great for anybody on a category 2 or category 3 budget to stay in. It fits the amount on my Retirement Budget Calculator says you can afford to pay. I must say, this is a really nice place. It's not the cheapest, but for the money I think it is very nice. It also has great, cheap food in its restaurant and a helpful and happy staff. Check out the video of this hotel a short walk from the old city.

Chiang Mai, Thailand -- Faun Pii -- The Spirit or Ghost Dance

Sometimes cultural differences are dramatic when living in Southeast Asia. One of the ones that stand out is the ritual of "faun pii" or spirit dancing.
Spirit or trance dances usually occur as a result of a vow or contract (kae bon) made between a medium  and their ancestral spirits (phii puu yaa). The dances attract large numbers of spectators. As spirit mediums (ma khi), they will dance non-stop, consume endless amounts of alcohol and smoke cigars.
The ancestral spirits are believed to "come down" upon the shoulders of their human hosts and once the spirit has taken possession of it's host, the medium is assisted by others to change clothes according to the costume appropriate for that particular spirit.
Once possession has occurred and costumes have been put on, the mediums begin to dance in a slow rhythmic manner to the melodic sounds of a traditional northern Thai Gamelan orchestra.

When most people think about Southeast Asia, which include Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia it conjures up images we have see from movies. A lot of scenes have been shot depicting Southeast Asia as rice paddies and farm land. These images can still be found here for real. And one that I seem to like the most is the rice fields or paddies as the rice sprouts and shoots up through the water to start its new life. The color green cannot be described only witnessed. Every year I just marvel at its natural beauty.
